Obituary

Sue Johnson died peacefully at Houston Hospice on December 18, 2023, in Houston, Texas. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at noon on December 29, 2023, at Ashford United Methodist Church.

Sue was born June 11, 1936, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, to Bill and Vida Robinson. She had faith in God from an early age since her mother was a Nazarene preacher. Growing up in Oklahoma, Sue relished fishing with her father, Bill.

After living most of her life in the tiny town of Dover, Oklahoma, Sue, her husband Roy, and her son David LeRoy moved to Colorado. Once there, she didn't waste any time attacking the ski slopes. Sue knew no fear when skiing. Several times, she fell head over heels, looking like a giant snowball rolling downhill. Once Sue stopped rolling downhill, she jumped up with a smile and had a good laugh, then continued down the hill to catch the ski tow back to the top of the mountain.

Sue continued to ski until the day she showed her son, David, how to dance the Mexican hat dance. As she danced around the hat, her knee popped. Sue was never able to ski again. But that just meant she now had more time to concentrate on golf.

She loved golf. Sue would play golf on any golf course regardless of difficulty or location. She traveled to golf destinations such as Myrtle Beach with her golfing buddy. They spent the weekend on the golf course.

Many Saturdays and Sundays, she and her son, David, watched the golf tournaments on TV. When Sue started living with David, he subscribed to the Golf Channel so she could watch golf tournaments on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Before moving to Texas, Sue took flying lessons to earn her private pilot's license. However, the instructor said she lacked the depth perception to land a plane safely. Sue never soloed, but she thoroughly enjoyed her time taking flying lessons.

Between all these activities, Sue also bowled regularly with teams from her place of work.

After moving in with David, she started to attend Ashford United Methodist Church. She enjoyed hearing God's word and celebrating the love of God through singing and listening to the choir. Sue knew her mind and followed her heart. So one Sunday, out of the blue, using her walker, she made her way to the front of the church and joined.

Going to church at Ashford was the highlight of her week. Sue treasured the people at the church and hardly let anyone pass without sharing a smile and a good word. In addition to the beautiful music at the church, Sue also listened to the Gaither Family whenever possible. She enjoyed the old-time gospel songs, and to celebrate her life, we'll be singing some of those old-time hymns at her celebration of life.

Sue is survived by her son, David LeRoy Johnson of Houston; two nieces and their husbands, Ann Niemann and husband John of Okarche, OK; Shelly Madden and husband Mark of Yukon, OK; two nephews, Jeff Robinson of Yukon, OK, and Mike Haverly and wife Jackie of Mustang, OK. And many great nieces and nephews whom she loved and delighted in.

Sue was preceded in death by her mother and father, Bill Robinson of Dover, OK; Vida Robinson of Henessey, OK.; brother and wife, Earl and Judy Robinson of Dover, OK; and Daughter-in-law, Ellen Thompson Johnson of Houston, TX.
