Julia Jean
Mcmahon
Apr 20, 1925 — Jul 5, 2023
Julia Jean McMahon, 98, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2023. She was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Clyde Bandy Herbert and Ruby Harvey and was known as "Sister" by her parents and younger twin sisters.
Julie graduated from Fort Smith High School in 1942 and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education from Hendrix College. While teaching junior high school, she earned a master's degree from the University of Arkansas. She met William McMahon at a USO dance at Camp Chaffee and the two were married in 1956 at the First Methodist Church Fort Smith. After Bill was discharged from the US Army, they lived in San Antonio and then Houston. Julie left teaching to rear their three children – Billy, Bobby, and Sarah – providing them with a nurturing home, varied experiences, and expectations for higher education. The spiritual foundations that she laid resulted in each child entering a saving faith in Jesus Christ and blessings for her grandchildren and great[1]grandchildren. In 1978 she returned to fulltime teaching at Mae Smith Elementary and eventually retired with 20 years of service. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, Christian woman, gracious hostess, avid bridge player, devoted scout leader, diligent chauffer, skilled square dancer, and enthusiastic supporter of dance troupes, marching bands, and sporting teams. As a grandmother, she always had time to read a story and serve her special "Granny" cookies. And until her last weeks, Julie kept her mind sharp with a daily crossword puzzle.
Julie is survived by her sister, Marolyn Crawford; her sons and daughters-in-law, Bill, Jr. and Sue McMahon of New Braunfels, Bob and Wanda McMahon of Brenham; her daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Wayne Hale of Clear Lake City; her ten grandchildren, Jennifer Faglie and her husband, Brad, Jonathan Hale and his wife, Rebecca, Jeffrey Hale and his wife, Brandy, Billy McMahon and his wife, Tara, David McMahon and his wife, Cate, Mar McMahon, Cary McMahon and his wife Alta, Juliana Long and her husband Chase, Jessica Hale, Joshua Hale; and seven great-grandchildren, Olivia Faglie, Amelia Faglie, Ainsley Hale, Reese Hale, Charlee McMahon, Ellie McMahon, Elizabeth McMahon; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Carolyn Taylor.
Julie will be laid to rest on July 21, 2023, at 10:00 am in Grandview Cemetery, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas 77505. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 am at Clearpoint Church, 5151 East Sam Houston Parkway South, Pasadena, Texas 77505, which will be followed by a lunch and visitation. Flowers may be sent to Clearpoint Church and memorial contributions made to the Alzheimer's Society of Houston, 2242 W Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77030.
